One of our users’ most requested feature is an add-on for LibreOffice and OpenOffice, similar to Docear4Word, which allows adding formatted references and bibliographies in Microsoft Word based on Docear’s BibTeX files. Unfortunately, we have no skills in developing add-ons for Libre or OpenOffice, which is why we were looking for a freelancer to help us. Now, finally, we found one. The freelancer is offering to develop a pendant to Docear4Word that works with LibreOffice and OpenOffice. This means, you will be able to select a reference from Docears’ BibTeX database, and the add-on will insert the in-text citation and the bibliography in your Libre/OpenOffice document. Analog to Docear4Word, you will be able to choose from more than 2,000 citation styles to format your references.
However, the freelancer is not developing the add-on for free. He asks for 2500 US$ (~1,900€), which we believe to be a fair price. Therefore, we kindly ask you to donate, so we can pay the freelancer to develop a Docear4Libre/OpenOffice. Of course, the add-on will be open-source, reading not only Docear’s BibTeX files but also BibTeX files of other BibTeX based reference managers. The freelancer already developed a simple proof-of concept (see screenshot), which uses citeproc-java to add BibTeX based references. As such, we have no doubts that the freelancer will be able to deliver the promised add-on — if we can collect enough money.
The freelancer’s is already working on the add-on and his goal is to finish it in the next two months or so. However, as long as we cannot pay him, he will not release the add-on, even if he has finished his work (and if he learns that there are no donations coming, he might decide to stop his work at any time). Therefore, if you want a Docear4Libre/OpenOffice, please donate now! Donate 1$, 5$, 10$, 50$ or 500$ — any contribution matters, and the sooner we have all the money, the sooner you can manage your BibTeX references in LibreOffice and OpenOffice.

Since more than one year we are offering Docear4Word, an add-in for Microsoft Word that helps you creating bibliographies. Docear4Word v1.21 is available for download. It fixes a bug that caused problems when you provided a ‘-‘ as page number without any numbers.
Today we released Docear4Word 1.2. It contains a few bug fixes. More precisely, we upgraded to the latest citeproc-js version which should fix some ordering problems. Docear4Word 1.1 is available for download and it offers two new features that will improve your work with references in Microsoft Word a lot. Actually, we added two new elements to the “Add References” dialog.
The first one is a “Docear->Docear4Word” button. It’s intended for adding several references at once when you have multiple BibTeX keys in our clipboard. And here is how it works: Most references managers (e.g. JabRef and Docear) allow you to select several reference entries from the database and copy their BibTeX keys to the clipboard. That means you have a string like “Cohen05,ritchie2008,Eto12” in your clipboard. Now, when you press the “Docear->Docear4Word” button, Docear4Word will automatically get that string from the clipboard, identify the BibTeX keys and select the references belonging to the keys. This will make inserting several references at once much easier.
Docear4Word 1.02 is available for download. It fixes one bug that occurred when adding several references at once. Today we released Docear4Word 1.01. The add-on for Microsoft Word allows you to manage your Docear references (and any other references stored as BibTeX) directly within Microsoft Word. Version 1.01 includes the following changes. Download it here!
Docear4Word is an add-on that allows managing your Docear references in Microsoft Word. It uses the citation style language (CSL), an open XML-based language to describe the formatting of citations and bibliographies. Not only Docear is using CSL but also other reference managers such as Zotero (who initiated the development of CSL) and Mendeley and they are all contributing their styles – this is why there are more than 2,000 citation styles you can use with Docear4Word, and the other reference managers. However, sometimes the citation style you need is not in the citation style repository and up to now it was quite challenging to create a new style (or edit an existing one).
During the past months, the Columbia University Libraries, Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, and Mendeley developed a WYSIWYG editor for citation styles (What You See Is What You Get). This editor makes it easier than ever to edit existing styles and create new ones. So, if you are missing a citation style for a journal or conference you are submitting a paper to, well… create it and send a big thank you to the three organizations making this possible! :-).
Docear4Word is ready to release but before we make it available for public download, we would like to publish another test version for our users. We have fixed several bugs, and added the feature to select a BibTeX file. By default, Docear4Word used the BibTeX file that is specified in Docear but you can specify any other BibTeX file you want. We also enhanced the field mapping but we cannot guarantee that everything is perfect. If you are missing some information in your bibliography (that are available in the BibTeX file), please let us know. But be aware that the reason might be the citation style – not all citation styles do show all fields. So, before you report some missing information, please test several citation styles and if they all don’t show a certain piece of information – well, than probably it’s a bug of Docear4Word.
After releasing the first private Beta of Docear4Word a few weeks ago, we are confident to release the first public Beta in about a week. Currently we are working on the final mapping of BibTeX fields and types with the corresponding entries of the Citation Style Language (CSL). Unfortunately, it is not always obvious how to match BibTeX and CSL. Our current mapping looks like the following. If you think something is missing, or incorrect, please let us know.
Wow, today really is a special day. First, we released Beta 4 of Docear with literature recommendation, and now… we have the pleasure to present Docear4Word (Beta). The Beta of Docear4Word is a fully functional Microsoft Word Add-on to create formatted references and bibliographies in over 1,700 citation styles (APA, IEEE, ACM, Havard, Chicago, …). Similar to Zotero, Mendeley, and other reference managers we use the citation style language (CSL) and citeproc-js. However, in contrast to MS-Word Add-Ons of other reference managers, Docear4Word is not a proprietary tool functioning only with its own database. Docear4Word works with any BibTeX file from any BibTeX reference manager (at least it should ;-)). Of course, there is BibTeX4Word, a tool offering similar functionality as Docear4Word (and also working with any BibTeX file). However, BibTeX4Word is very difficult to install, not really easy to use, and there are not that many citation styles as far as we know.
It’s half a year ago that we announced the development of a Microsoft Word Add-on to insert BibTeX based references in the same way as Zotero, Mendeley, Endnote and other references managers do. A major requirement for the add-on was to use the citation style language (CSL) which allows using over 2,000 citation styles. Well, it has been (and still is) a long and hard way to go (maybe we will elaborate on this later). However, I just want to let you know that the work on Docear4Word is going on and we are just before a first test release – I hope that in two or three weeks the first demo is ready to be released (for the beginning we probably make it available to registered users only, so register now :-)).
For now, here is a little teaser to give you an idea what is coming: the first screenshot of Docear4Word. Please let us know your ideas for the Add-On: What should it be able to do? What do you like about the MS Word add-ons from other reference managers? Probably we won’t be able to consider your wishes for the first version but maybe for Docear4Word 2.0.
