We created an introductory video for Docear. It aims at providing a brief overview of Docear’s capabilities and the basic workflow. Please let us know what you think could be improved. Personally, I believe it could be done much better in general but we don’t have the skills to do it ;-). If you have experience with video editing, please don’t hesitate to make your own video. If someone is interested I would also gladly share the raw material.

Docear looks like a useful tool. Video is confusing, not clear where things are going. Would be good to have some audio annotation about what tasks are being initiated so the user could understand better what is happening. Also agree that slowing it down a bit would be good.

Is is possible to do a literature search (e.g. Google Scholar, PubMed or PubMedCentral) from within Docear?

Can Docear import Papers (Mekentosj) libraries? Interoperate with Papers?

Hi David, in about 2 month we will release Docear 1.0 which will have more intuitive GUI and a better Tutorial. So far it’s not possible to search e.g. Google Scholar and cannot inter-operate with Papers. If Papers can export its data as BibTeX, Docear could read this BibTeX file.

btw. you will get faster response if you post in our support forums http://www.docear.org/support/forums/

the video is good for getting people interested. it got me very interested.

as a tutorial though, the video is a little frustrating for me since i get lost at 0:52 or so, when the incoming map is sent floating and the windows are tiled so the literature&annotations map is below the incoming. i cant find a way to send a map floating or to see a split window view
1) how do you do that?

and the fade transition at around 1:00 hides exactly the critical steps to transfer info from the incoming to the literature&annotations map!
2) how do you do that?

thnx

    Hello,

currently, there is no integrated split view. but you can just start Docear twice and adjust the windows manually. Then you can cut&paste the nodes from the incoming mind map to the literature&annotations mind map. But be careful and do not open (and edit) the same mind map twice. This might cause some problems when saving the mind maps. If you have further questions, I would suggest posting in our forum 🙂

You could also open both mind maps (incoming and literature) within the same instance. Each map will open in a separate tab (the tabs are listed on the very bottom). You can switch between the tabs either by selecting them with the mouse or by pressing “CTRL+TAB” key.

    Best,
    Joeran

This video shows that Docear imports higlighted text from Foxit. It is misleading as you state in manual that Docear can not do that. When did this feature disappeared? Or is this video a fake?

This video is pretty good for the overall content.

I would make the following refinements:

1. Slow it down just a little. The mouse is flying around on the workspace and unfamiliar users will not be able to follow easily.

2. Change the sound track. I would go with something a little more serene; say intermezzo from cavalleria rusticana for example.

P.s. it was great to see the Docear JabRef user interface revised to work on the 10inch computer screens in MS Windows.

However the downloadable standalone JabRef user interface doesn’t size to the 10 inch (Open Office doesn’t either yet)

Maybe I will get onto Linux one of these days soon!

Great WORK on the DOCEAR! I feel very fortunate to be able to test drive the beta version (having been on the SciPlore registered user list)
