Until recently, AI systems were primarily used for narrow tasks such as analysing large datasets or identifying patterns in complex information. However, with large-language models (LLMs), we are approaching a new frontier: the full automation of the scientific process, from idea generation and literature review to experimental design, execution, evaluation, and even the writing and reviewing of research papers.
In the near term, we expect these AI systems to serve as intelligent assistants, significantly reducing the workload of human scientists by automating time-consuming and repetitive tasks such as literature searches or experimental planning and implementation. Looking ahead, these AI agents may be capable not only of making original scientific discoveries but also of continuously improving itself, all without human intervention.
In the recent months, dozens of tools have been published, promising to automate parts or even the entire research pipeline.
In this post, we aim to provide a clearer picture by reviewing some of the most promising AI research tools available today. As part of this ongoing effort, we previously evaluated Sakana’s AI Scientist v11 (Beel et al., 2025)2, which delivered mixed results and highlighted both the potential and current limitations of autonomous research agents.
We compiled an overview of all the AI research tools we identified, along with general information about their capabilities, in the table below. This overview will be regularly updated as we conduct more in-depth evaluations and as new, more advanced tools become available.
