PhD students Lukas Wegmeth and Tobias Vente had the opportunity to visit Tsinghua University in Beijing, China, for a month-long research visit with Professor Min Zhang, a leading expert in recommender systems and information retrieval.
Professor Min Zhang is a distinguished professor in the Department of Computer Science at Tsinghua University and an influential researcher in recommender systems and information retrieval. She serves as the Editor-in-Chief of ACM Transactions on Information Systems (ACM TOIS) and is a member of the ACM Recommender Systems Steering Committee. Her research has significantly advanced personalized recommendation algorithms, user behavior modeling, and large-scale recommendation system optimization.
During their visit, Lukas and Tobias presented their PhD research to Professor Zhang’s team, sparking insightful discussions on cutting-edge recommender systems. In intensive brainstorming sessions with the entire research group, they explored key challenges in AutoRecSys (Automated Recommender Systems), including meta-learning techniques, dynamic model selection architectures, and the evolving role of large language models in personalization. These exchanges yielded valuable insights about optimizing recommendation pipelines and addressing real-world challenges while also identifying promising new directions for collaborative research.

By the end of their stay, they had established a joint research agenda, paving the way for future collaborations on the current state of automated machine learning in recommender systems research. In the future, this partnership will strengthen ties between the two institutions and accelerate progress toward more intelligent and automated recommender systems.
Beyond their academic collaboration, Lukas and Tobias embraced Chinese culture through visits to Beijing and Shanghai, where they experienced the city’s vibrant energy and authentic local cuisine and gained deeper insights into China’s unique blend of tradition and modernity.
